IEN-573, Quality Systems III

Catalog Data: IEN-573, Quality Systems III: Advanced Quality Assurance

Credits: (4-0-4)

Course Description: This course covers the advanced topics of modern methods of quality control and improvement that are used in the manufacturing and service industries. It includes statistical methods of quality improvement, concept of variation and its reduction, statistical process control, designed experiments in quality improvement, and quality in the service sector. Taguchi and Deming’s quality concepts will also be discussed.

Prerequisites: IEN-333, Engineering Statistics III and IEN-434, Quality System I: Quality Assurance

Course Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students should have the ability to:

  • Define, recall and use the concept of statistical thinking. [IE PEO’s 1,3]

  • Explain and apply the new quality philosophy. [ IE PEO’s 1,2,3]

  • Relate variation reduction to process improvement. [IE PEO’s 1,3]

  • Recognize the role of DOE in process improvement. [IE PEO’s 1,2,3]

  • Describe and apply the important concepts of control charts and DOE in product and process improvement. [IE PEO’s 1,2,3]

  • Use the appropriate statistical methods to display and interpret quality data. [IE PEO’s 3,4]

  • Apply appropriate tools for quality improvement. [IE PEO’s 3,4,5]

Prerequisites by Topics:

  • Basic probability concepts

  • Descriptive statistics

  • Basic inferential statistics

  • Basic DOE concepts and basic SPC tools

  • Proficient in using MINITAB

Topics Covered:

  • Quality philosophies, fundamentals and continuous improvement

  • Basic probability, statistical methods in quality improvement

  • Stabilizing and improving a process with control charts: part 1 ( review)

  • Stabilizing and improving a process with control charts: part 2 (additional methods)

  • Quality improvement with designed experiments : part 1 (review)

  • Quality improvement with designed experiments : part 2 (advanced topics)

  • Quality systems and systems integration

Class Schedule: 240 minutes per week

Computer Usage: Statistical package MINITAB will be used throughout this course.

Laboratory Projects: Term project or mini projects may be assigned
