Q:  Who is eligible for Student Membership?

A Student Member is a student regularly enrolled in approved engineering or engineering technology curriculum at the undergraduate or graduate level.

All others are invited to become involved at meetings and events!

Q:  What is the Membership Term?

The membership year runs from October 1 to the following September 30.

If dues have not been received by December 31, members become inactive and service will cease till dues are received.

Inactive membership records are saved for 5 years before they are deleted. At any time during these 5 years if a member wishes to reactivate their membership they need only pay the current membership years' dues. After five years a new membership application will need to be completed.

Q:  What happens when I graduate?

ASME International has five grades* of membership

Member
Requires attainments equal to eight years of active practice in the profession of engineering or teaching.

Attainment of a degree in an approved engineering curriculum or a baccalaureate degree in an approved engineering technology curriculum shall be accepted as equivalent to the eight year experience requirement. Furthermore, appropriate credit toward the eight year requirement will be given for the following: graduation from an unapproved engineering or engineering technology curriculum, completion of portions of such curricula, completion of a course of study in a technical institute or other recognized educational programs.

The experience of one who has not been graduated from an approved curriculum should show variety, progress and promotion in the performance of engineering functions.

The Student E-Zine is electronically delivered to your home, providing up-to-the-minute information such as "Reminders", "News-of-the-Month," "Featured Contest," "Deadlines,"and "Links to Professional Newsletters."

E-MENTORING

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP CARD, PIN AND CERTIFICATE
Upon becoming a student member of ASME a membership card will be mailed to you. Students in the United States will receive their membership certificate and pin from their university's ASME Student Section advisor. If there is no advisor at your university these items will be mailed to you directly. For replacement cards e-mail infocentral@asme.org

DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP SKILLS/NETWORKING
ASME has 125,000 members, which include some 24,000 students, with nearly 400 student sections located around the globe. With a strong membership base and many sponsored activities, ASME offers student members the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and the ability to network with mechanical engineering professionals.

The ASME website is the Society’s state-of-the-art- communications medium on the World Wide Web. It gives all users access to technical discussion groups, information on ASME Codes & Standards and publications, databases of conference paper abstracts, conference proceedings, and much more.

LIFETIME E-MAIL ADDRESS
ASME members can register for a lifetime e-mail address that will forward to whatever e-mail address you prefer. This means you can use your ASME address throughout your ASME membership regardless of changes in your Internet Service Provider or e-mail address.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP, FELLOWSHIP AND STUDENT LOAN PROGRAMS
These programs help student members subsidize their education. The scholarship awards range from $1000 to $6,000, while the graduate teaching fellowships encourage student members to pursue the doctorate in mechanical engineering and encourages engineering education as a profession. Furthermore, the ASME Student Loan Fund has helped over 1,000 ASME student members with low interest student loans. In fact, the loan rates are a nominal 1% below the Federally Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL) rate.

ASME offers a number of competitions to test your mechanical engineering skills and to earn awards.

** Please consult your local ASME chapter for additional procedures and/or dues
*** An annual service charge of $29.00 will be required of members who became dues exempt as of 1/1/95 (with the exception of prepaid life and honorary members).
