Prof. Brian J. McCartin Receives
Kettering University Y2K
Outstanding Researcher Award

Dr. Brian J. McCartin, Professor of Applied Mathematics, is the recipient of the Kettering University Outstanding Researcher Award for the year 2000. Dr. McCartin graduated with Highest Distinction from the University of Rhode Island and went on to complete his Ph.D. at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He also holds a Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude) from the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford.

Prior to joining the Kettering faculty in 1993, Dr. McCartin was Head of Computational Electromagnetics for United Technologies Corporation and Chairperson of Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Hartford, Connecticut campus. Dr. McCartin is a recognized expert in the field of Computational Mathematics, specifically wave propagation and human biology, and has lectured internationally on these topics.

Dr. McCartin has published 80 papers in Applied Mathematics (44 of them since joining Kettering's faculty) on topics ranging from the design of stealth vehicles to stock option pricing to the analysis of human genetics to the geometry of music. He is especially proud of the eight publications that he has co-authored with Kettering undergraduates.

When informed of this special recognition by his colleagues, Prof. McCartin responded,

"I want to pay special tribute to my deceased parents who nurtured my academic development literally from the crib. Also, I would also like to express my profound gratitude to my wife (and piano duet partner), Barbara, who not only has patiently accepted the single-minded devotion that creative work requires but also has actively participated by illustrating my publications!"
