SUMMARY
Matrix-analytic methods (MAM) for stochastic models have gained wide
applications since their major exposition in 1970 by Marcel Neuts and several
other researchers. The theories surrounding this method continue to develop
and evolve. Many new insights show up in different forms, and new applications
keep appearing in telecommunications, production, and computer engineering,
and inventory modelling, to mention a few.
With the immense growth of research in MAM theory and applications in
different fields that was occurring in different parts of the world, the
need to convene a forum to report on recent progress and set directions
for future became obvious. The first International Conference on Matrix-Analytic
Methods in Stochastic Models held in Flint, Michigan, during August
24-25, 1995, was the result of that need. The conference was very successful
with participants coming from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States of
America. The Second International Conference on Matrix-Analytic Methods in
Stochastic Models was held in Winnipeg, Canada, during July 24-25, 1998. The
presentations at the conference cover both traditional as well as new
areas of research.
The proceedings is published as a book by Notable Publications, Inc. The details
are:

Our sincere thanks to all the participants, referees, and the scientific
advisory committee members, who made this conference a great success.
The participants unanimously supported the idea of having this conference
on a regular basis. Plans are underway to have the
Third Conference in
2000 in Brussels, Belgium.
