Kettering Slang

During your first few days (and months) on campus, you will hear more than a few words that will seem foreign to you.  Some are essential to everyday Kettering life, so below is a list of some of the more common terms.  If you have questions about any of these, just ask a COMPASS crew member, group leader, unit buddy or your RA.  For locations and room numbers referenced, please use the campus map and Academic Building (AB) maps on the "About Campus" link.

Locations

AB - Academic Building

Admissions Office- Located on the 4th Floor of the CC / In the same office as the Co-op Managers (The wall is marked "Admissions")

Art Gallery - on the 4th floor of the AB (Room 4-511)

the Beach - the large field at the center of the campus, home of the Bulldog

Bell Tower - Next to Third Ave., above the Pool

BJ's Lounge - Commonly known as just "BJ's", this lounge is located on the 1st Floor of the CC.  A student lounge is located outside of it.

Bulldog/Painting the Bulldog - Located on the beach is a large metal bulldog, the school mascot.  Tradition is to cover it in spray paint, whether to advertise an event, group, or just for the heck of it.

CC - Campus Center

CETL - Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning - Located on the First Floor of the AB, with Thesis Services

Chevrolet Ave. - the road that the Mott Building is by, as well as the Campus Village Apartments

Co-op Managers Offices - Located on the 4th Floor of the CC / In the same office as Admissions (The wall is marked "Admissions," not Co-op Offices)

Crib-a-thon or Room AB 2225 - Walk to the AB library, take a left, go to the end of the hall, take a right, and the first door on your left is the Crib-a-thon.  There is another entrance if you go to the end that hall, and it's before the ramp.

Dupont St. - the road that runs behind the AB

Ernie's - the student cafeteria in the CC (Sunrise Room and Sunset Room); Ernie is the manager; you'll get to know him in no time

the Fishbowl - Room AB 1212, a large room surrounded by picture windows, resembling a fishbowl

Flint-town - The local name of Flint

Great Court - center of the Second Floor in the CC

Hang Out Room - A room with couches, tables and vending machines in the AB (Room 2-212)

International Room - The big room on the 5th floor of the CC (get off the elevators, turn to the right); called the International Room because it used to have flags from all over the world hanging along the walls.

MC - Mott Center (C.S. Mott Engineering and Science Center)/old Delphi building

McKinnon Theater - Walk across Third Ave. from the CC to the AB.  Don't walk up the ramp, and don't walk in the main doors, instead, walk in the single door in front of you.  Walk up one flight of steps, and walk out of the stairwell.  Turn left, and you are at McKinnon.

Pizza Doors - Doors on the first floor of Thompson Hall that connect it to the CC/Tunnel; also used as a through-way from the beach-side of campus to the Mott Building-side of campus; makes a good pickup and pizza delivery location for this reason (and hence its name)

the Pool - the large paved, vallied area between the CC and Third Ave.

the Ramp - Walk to the furthest entrance of the Crib-a-thon.  You'll see the ramp

The Rec. - The Connie and Jim John Recreation Center

TH or RH - Thompson Hall or residence hall

Thesis Services - Located on the First Floor of the AB / Located with the CETL

3rd Ave. - the road that the main entrance to the student parking lot is on, as well as the children's museum (you will probably have to cross it everyday to get to class)
