Approximately 2,500 undergraduate students come from over 1,100 secondary schools in the United States, Canada, and 30 other countries. In addition, there are over 800 graduate students pursuing Master of Science degrees in Manufacturing Management and in Engineering with areas of study in mechanical, automotive, electrical and manufacturing systems engineering. Kettering University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. All eligible undergraduate engineering degrees are accredited by the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology.

Kettering University was originally founded as the School of Automotive Trades in 1919 as a night school for employees of Flint area industries. In 1923 the school became the Flint Institute of Technology, and then was taken over by the General Motors Corp. in 1926, with the name changed to General Motors Institute. Under GM control, GMI became a true co-op college, where students alternating classroom with on-the-job work experience at various GM plant locations while earning a bachelors degree in engineering fields. In 1982, General Motors spun-off the school and GMI Engineering & Management Institute became an independent private college, free from the control and financial support of General Motors Corp. While ties with General Motors remain strong (GM provides co-op jobs for approximately 15% of our students) new relationships have been established with over 600 other industrial, business, and governmental entities throughout the United States and around the World. Now, with the new name of Kettering University, America's premier co-op college prepares to make its mark in the 21st centry as the premier fully co-op university in the world.

Carillon (bell tower) Kettering University students begin a unique five year Cooperative Education Program in their freshman year by alternating between 12-week periods of school and work. Kettering University excels in providing its students with top-notch classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and career directed co-op work experience in business and industry. More than 600 corporate affiliate companies, at over 850 locations world-wide, employ Kettering University students during their work terms. In addition to providing students with hands-on application of the material they learn in the classroom, the typical co-op experience allows a student to earn between $30,000 and $60,000 during their five years at Kettering University. A work related design thesis, the "fifth-year" thesis, is required for graduation. As a result, Kettering University graduates are in high demand at America's leading corporations and are regularly admitted to the nation's top graduate and professional schools. Approximately 95% of graduating students find employment in their chosen profession immediately upon graduation. The great majority of more than 26,200 alumni have chosen to pursue careers in engineering, manufacturing, management, and related staff functions in industrial and business organizations. Due in part, we believe, to the cooperative employment program that is the hallmark of GMI, graduates hold such positions in organizations as President, Excecutive Vice President, Chief Engineer, General Manager and many other responsible positions.
